SVLK – Indonesia’s Timber Legality Assurance System

What is SVLK ?

SVLK (Sistem Verificasi Legalitas Kayu) is the acronym of Indonesia’s national timber legality assurance system, which is a mandatory legality and sustainability certification system built on a national multistakeholder consensus.

Is SVLK enough to prove the legality of the wood ?

Yes. Under Indonesian law, SVLK certification and related documents (SVLK certificates and export licences called V-Legal Documents) constitute proof of legality for Indonesian timber products. Until the start of FLEGT licensing, Indonesian products with a V-Legal Document that are exported to the EU will have to go through the normal due diligence process under the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR). Once FLEGT licensing starts, FLEGT-licensed products will be considered comply with the EUTR requirements, meaning that no due diligence is required.

What is SVLK/TLAS Certification ?

The Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu/Timber Legality Assurance Standard (SVLK/TLAS) was developed by the government of Indonesia to support the eradication of illegal logging and promote good forest management. SVLK/TLAS certification enables you to guarantee the legality of the timber used in your products, and is a requirement for selling wood products within Indonesia. Certification also enables you to meet the import requirements of destination countries and assure consumers that your wood raw material comes from sustainable sources.

Benefits of Certification

SVLK/TLAS certification will allow you to:

• Comply with the Indonesian government’s regulations regarding the legality of timber.
• Meet import requirements of countries that require assurance of timber legality
• Gain access to new markets.
• Meet consumer demands for sustainably sourced wood products
